Our roles and duties as women are deeply engrained in us, generation after generation. Our identities and validations, often defined by others, leave us with inner conflicts. Our mothers and grandmothers perpetuate definitions of us as women that are created by society and religion, and justify their own roles and activities based on these expectations. We function in a world where women adjust their aspirations to match traditional ideals or strive to achieve perfection in traditional roles coupled with professional working responsibilities. My work examines these dilemmas: the feminine character defined through beauty, clothing, social conduct and religion; the stereotypical roles we assume as mothers, caretakers and professionals; and the myriad of consequences we face as a result.

The medium I use for an individual work of art is thoughtfully chosen for each piece. Until recently, I examined the issues of feminine identity exclusively through paintings and drawings; however more recently, the work has moved out beyond the two -dimensional surface. Various materials, such as waxed papers, fabrics, string, threads and hair, are incorporated in these new three-dimensional installations. The actual process of creating each piece also has become important in achieving the final desired effects. Traditional methods and crafts associated with women are used to construct the work and may include collaborative efforts with other women artists. The supporting photographs, paintings and drawings, depicting females and their garments and costumes, remain an integral element in the study of the feminine character and work side by side with the sculptural counterparts.

In my work I aim for an awareness of how women have been defined in the past and the insight this knowledge gives us as we move forward.
